Social Security benefits will increase 3.6 percent in 2027, the Social Security Administration announced on Wednesday. The adjustment is the largest since 2023 and will add about $75 a month to the average retired worker’s check.
Nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries will see the higher payments starting in January 2027. About 7.3 million Supplemental Security Income recipients will receive the increase beginning 31 December 2026. Some people receive both. The average retired worker’s monthly benefit is projected to rise from roughly $2,095 to $2,170.
The cost-of-living adjustment is set by formula. It tracks the rise in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers from the third quarter of 2025 to the third quarter of 2026. The September CPI-W reading of 3.9 percent helped push the final figure to 3.6 percent, up from this year’s 2.8 percent adjustment.
The maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security tax will rise to $192,300 in 2027 from $184,500. The earnings limit for workers younger than full retirement age will increase to $25,560. For those who reach full retirement age during the year the limit will be $67,920.
Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said the adjustment will give 76 million Americans greater financial stability. The higher COLA follows a year in which energy prices rose sharply after the start of the Iran conflict. Crude oil averaged about $64.50 a barrel in January and peaked near $108 in May, according to data cited by advocacy groups.
The Senior Citizens League and AARP had projected figures in the 3.5 to 3.6 percent range in the weeks before the official announcement. The actual 3.6 percent matches the higher end of those estimates. Over a full year the average beneficiary will collect roughly $900 more.
The adjustment does not change the underlying long-term financing pressures on the trust funds. It does, however, provide a measurable increase that tracks the third-quarter inflation data. Notices will be available online in late November for most beneficiaries through their my Social Security accounts. The concrete numbers released on Wednesday are the 3.6 percent rate, the $75 average monthly gain, the January start date, and the new taxable maximum of $192,300.
