Russian missile and drone strikes overnight left at least 600,000 people without electricity in Ukraine and damaged about 30 energy facilities, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Wednesday.
The State Emergency Service reported at least three people killed and 21 injured in Kyiv. A power station in the Dniprovskyi district was hit, leaving more than 1,000 residential buildings without heating. Zelenskyy called the attacks an ostentatious disrespect to efforts by Donald Trump to arrange an energy ceasefire between the two sides.
Ukrainian officials said they received no early warning from partners about the incoming ballistic missiles. Zelenskyy did not specify which partners. Trump said on Wednesday that the United States had not stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine and that Washington wants the war to end. The strikes continued while SpaceX imposed a speed limit on military Starlink terminals used by Ukrainian forces, further complicating drone operations.
The energy attacks have become a regular feature of the war. Russia has targeted generation and transmission infrastructure through the winter months. Ukraine has responded with long-range strikes on Russian oil facilities, which the Trump administration has pressed Kyiv to halt. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said contacts over a possible energy truce were continuing but that no new progress had been made.
The concrete figures released on Wednesday are the 600,000 people without power, the roughly 30 damaged energy sites, the three dead and 21 injured in the capital, and the more than 1,000 buildings left without heating in one Kyiv district. Zelenskyy linked the scale of the strikes to the ongoing diplomatic exchanges. Whether the attacks alter the terms of any eventual energy arrangement remains open.
