Russia hits Ukraine's power grid before winter, and Kyiv cuts electricity

A barrage on 30 September struck energy sites around Kyiv, including the Trypilska plant. Zelenskyy counted nearly 190 drones and ballistic missiles, and seven dead, including a child. Ukrenergo imposed the capital's first emergency cuts since spring.

Global dealmaking falls under $1 trillion in the third quarter

LSEG data published on 1 October put third-quarter mergers and acquisitions at $993 billion, down 41 percent from the second quarter and the first sub-$1 trillion quarter since the second quarter of 2025. Year to date, volume is still up 28 percent at $3.9 trillion, the highest for the period since 2001, while the number of deals fell 8 percent. Asia was the exception, at $242 billion.

French police hold 625 people as school protests spread beyond Saint-Denis

Interior minister Laurent Nunez said police detained about 625 people on Wednesday as high-school protests over absent teachers and broken buildings entered a second violent day. Officials counted 83 injured officers and 159 injured students and staff, including one student who lost part of the use of a hand. The worst of the Paris-area clashes were at Lycée Paul Éluard in Saint-Denis.
