Singapore recorded its highest air pollution level of 2026 on Wednesday as haze from Indonesian wildfires pushed one-hour PM2.5 concentrations to about 288 micrograms per cubic metre.
The reading is more than five times the World Health Organization’s 24-hour guideline. Visibility dropped and the National Environment Agency issued health advisories. The haze is driven by peatland and forest fires in Indonesia, a seasonal pattern that has intensified this year.
Timor-Leste suspended in-person classes nationwide from 15 to 17 October after air quality worsened from the same smoke and pollutant particles transported across the region. Schools will shift to remote arrangements for those three days. Other Southeast Asian capitals have reported elevated readings but have not matched Singapore’s peak.
Indonesian authorities have deployed additional resources to fire-prone areas in Sumatra and Kalimantan. The fires are often linked to land-clearing practices on drained peat soils that burn for long periods once ignited. Regional agreements on haze management have produced mixed results in past seasons.
The concrete measurements on Wednesday are Singapore’s 288 microgram one-hour PM2.5 peak, the three-day school suspension in Timor-Leste, and the continued transport of smoke from Indonesian fires. Health agencies have advised vulnerable residents to limit outdoor activity while the elevated levels persist.
