Kimberly Guilfoyle resigned as United States ambassador to Greece on Tuesday after the White House publicly asked for her departure amid allegations of improper conduct that she has denied.
New White House press secretary Katie Zacharia said at her first briefing that the administration had asked Guilfoyle to resign. Zacharia called her a wonderful asset and wished her well. President Donald Trump later told reporters that Guilfoyle had been doing a good job in Greece but that he did not like what he had been reading. He said he had not spoken with her personally.
Guilfoyle posted her resignation on X within two hours of Zacharia’s comments. She wrote that serving as ambassador had been the honour of a lifetime and that she would vigorously defend her name, reputation, and integrity. She described the allegations as false and said she would not allow them to define her decades of public service. A White House official confirmed that the formal resignation had been received.
The Wall Street Journal had reported a series of claims, including that Guilfoyle asked a longtime Trump donor, Eric Deters, to wire $100,000 to cover an American Express bill before her Senate confirmation. Other reports described threats to a host-country official, acceptance of improper gifts and services, and offers to use influence inside the administration. Guilfoyle’s lawyers have disputed the authenticity of some messages and said she followed State Department ethics guidance.
Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host and onetime fiancée of Donald Trump Jr., was confirmed as ambassador in 2025. Her tenure lasted roughly a year. The State Department’s inspector general had opened an inquiry after the Journal stories appeared. Trump had indicated on Monday that he was looking at the matter and that the administration was not happy.
The concrete sequence on Tuesday is the public request from the new press secretary, Guilfoyle’s immediate resignation post denying the claims, Trump’s comment that he did not like what he had read, and the White House confirmation that the resignation was formal. The underlying allegations remain the subject of the inspector general review and Guilfoyle’s stated intention to contest them.
