More than 200 Sikh community representatives, including families of victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, gathered near Rahul Gandhi’s residence in New Delhi on Saturday and burned his effigy.
They beat the effigy with slippers in protest against remarks allegedly describing former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar as a party role model. Kumar, convicted in connection with the 1984 riots, died two days earlier.
Protesters demanded a formal apology from Gandhi and his resignation. They said the comments insulted families who have sought justice for decades.
The demonstration took place on the afternoon of August 22. No injuries were reported. Police monitored the gathering but did not disperse it.
Sajjan Kumar’s death had already reopened public discussion of the 1984 events. The alleged remarks attributed to Gandhi intensified the anger among the protesters.
