Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Saturday coined the term “Nyaya-nomics” to describe the combination of rule of law and economics that courts must speak.
Speaking at the 11th BRICS+ Legal Forum organised by the Bar Association of India, he said the justice delivery system needs to ensure trust, predictability and stability if it is to spur economic growth.
Kant argued that courts play a direct role in creating the conditions for investment and commerce. Without reliable enforcement of contracts and clear legal outcomes, economic activity suffers.
The remarks come as India continues to position itself as a destination for foreign capital and as a participant in BRICS economic initiatives. The forum brought together legal professionals from member and partner countries.
Kant’s formulation links the everyday work of the judiciary to measurable economic outcomes rather than treating the two spheres as separate.
