Zelenskyy calls the drone strike on a Coca-Cola plant near Kyiv a signal to America
A Shahed hit the Coca-Cola Beverages Ukraine site in Velyka Dymerka on 3 September. Officials reported no injuries. The plant is the company’s only bottling site in the country and also fills Fanta, Sprite and BonAqua.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on the night of 3 September that a Russian drone had struck the Coca-Cola plant in Velyka Dymerka, in Brovary district east of Kyiv. “Coca-Cola has now become such an enemy to them that they are burning it with their Shaheds,” he said in his evening address. “A clear Russian signal to America. The Russians cannot not know that this is an American company.”
A company spokesperson for Coca-Cola Beverages Ukraine Limited confirmed the attack to local press. Videos from the industrial estate showed a large fire and thick black smoke. Ukrainian media, citing sources, said one unmanned aircraft hit warehouses of finished product. Early reports said there were no dead and no wounded. The State Emergency Service had not, at the time of Zelenskyy’s address, issued its own incident note for Brovary district.
Andy Hunder, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine, told Reuters that the company was working with the authorities and that “ensuring the safety and well-being of people remains top priority.”
The Velyka Dymerka factory is Coca-Cola’s only production site in Ukraine. It bottles Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite, Schweppes, Rich juices, Fuze Tea and BonAqua. Russian forces hit the same facility in early March 2022, at the start of the full-scale invasion. The plant later resumed work. A second hit four years later lands in a different political setting: Washington is fighting a separate war with Iran, and Zelenskyy is trying to keep American attention on a Ukrainian front that no longer leads every newscast.
The night’s wider raid was large. Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched 163 attack drones, about half of them jet-powered versions of the Shahed design. A separate strike the same day destroyed a Nova Poshta depot and office in Dnipro, killing one employee and wounding five, according to Ukrainian reports.
Zelenskyy’s “signal to America” line is a political reading. Coca-Cola HBC, the bottler that operates in Ukraine, is listed in Switzerland and is not the Atlanta parent. The brand on the warehouse wall is American. The insurance file, the spare-parts list and the decision to rebuild will run through European and Ukrainian entities. That distinction will matter in any later claim against Moscow. It does not change the picture of a burning bottling hall on the Brovary road.
Consumer-goods plants have been hit throughout the war: grain silos, seed-oil tanks, poultry factories, and now a soft-drink line. The pattern is not new. What is new on 3 September is the president naming the brand and the country of the brand in the same sentence as the drone type. He is asking Washington to treat an attack on a familiar logo as an attack that requires an answer. The answer, if it comes, will not be written by the bottler.
