Four Chinese container ships are due on the Northern Sea Route this month
NewNew Shipping has four 4,800-TEU vessels scheduled for a China to St Petersburg service in October, with two more in June 2027. In August its Xin Xin Hai 1 became the first Chinese container ship into Murmansk via the Arctic, with about 500 containers. Last summer the route saw 23 container transits, up from 15.

Four ice-class container ships of about 4,800 TEU are scheduled to enter a China to St Petersburg service this month on the Northern Sea Route, with two more planned for June 2027. The operator is NewNew Shipping. In August its Xin Xin Hai 1, a 29,000-deadweight-ton vessel, became the first Chinese container ship to reach Murmansk by that route, carrying about 500 containers of automotive components. The October sailings are the point at which a trial crossing becomes a timetable.
The ships sit inside a longer argument about whether the Arctic is a seasonal workaround for the Red Sea. Sea Legend, a Hong Kong-registered line, has planned eight Arctic sailings with seven ships this season, sold as an Ice Silk Road that can save 10 to 15 days between Asia and northern Europe by staying out of Bab el-Mandeb. Container transits on the Northern Sea Route totalled 23 last summer, up from 15 in 2024, a count carried by the Financial Times and repeated in shipping analysis. Twenty-three is a real increase. It is not a second Suez. Analysts who watch the Gulf have called the route a niche, commercially real as a summer express and not yet a threat to Gulf ports.
NewNew's own history explains why October matters. The company and Rosatom set up a joint venture, Northern Sea Route Shipping Line, in China in late 2024. By June 2025 they were still choosing a yard and talking about state support for up to five Arc7 vessels, with a first ship no later than 2027. That Arc7 programme has not produced a keel the trade press can point to. The six 4,800-TEU ships are a separate order. Chinese reports have called them Arc3, a lower ice class than Arc7. The distinction is the difference between a ship that can work a harder ice season and a ship that can work the summer window. October is late in that window.
The cargo, so far, is specific. Xin Xin Hai 1's 500 containers were automotive components. The expanded fleet is meant to support two Northern Sea Route voyages a month, feeding Chinese car plants in St Petersburg, Moscow and Kaliningrad. That is a closed loop between Chinese factories and Russian assembly, not a general Asia-Europe liner. A ship that exists to move parts for cars that will be sold in Russia does not compete with a Suez string carrying European retail. It competes with the rail and the longer sea route those parts use now, and it does so only while the ice allows.
The war in the Gulf is why the route is being discussed in Dubai and Singapore as well as in Murmansk. A container owner who has spent two years routing around the Red Sea will look at a 10-to-15-day saving. The same owner will look at ice class, insurance, and a season that ends. Arild Moe, at the Fridtjof Nansen Institute, has said the disruption on the approaches to Suez is what made cargo owners pay attention. Attention is not a booking. The booking NewNew can actually show is the August arrival and the four ships dated for this month.
Two numbers should stay in separate columns. Twenty-three container transits last summer, against 15 the summer before, is the route's recent history. Four ships in October, two more in June, is one Chinese operator's plan. The Arc7 joint venture remains a plan without a confirmed yard start. If the October ships sail, the Northern Sea Route has a dedicated China-St Petersburg container loop for the first time at this scale. If ice or insurance stops them, the August crossing of Xin Xin Hai 1 stays what it was: a first, with 500 containers, and not yet a service.
