The US national debt crossed the 40 trillion dollar mark for the first time, according to Treasury Department figures released on August 19, 2026. Total public debt outstanding stood at 40.047 trillion dollars as of the close of business on August 18.
Debt held by the public, which excludes intragovernmental holdings such as Social Security trust funds, measured 32.266 trillion dollars on the same day.
The milestone arrived earlier than many forecasts. Factors include higher interest costs on existing debt, continued deficits, spending linked to the conflict with Iran, and reduced revenue tied to tariff measures that courts later invalidated.
Interest payments now form a large share of annual federal outlays. The country remains on track to borrow more than 2 trillion dollars this fiscal year alone.
Debt-to-GDP stands near 123 percent. Per-citizen share of the total debt approximates 116,000 dollars. Economists continue to debate whether the trajectory is sustainable or reflects underlying economic capacity.
Long-term borrowing costs had risen in recent sessions before a partial reversal after the Treasury announced plans to buy back more long-dated securities. The 40 trillion figure is likely to focus attention on fiscal policy choices for the remainder of the decade.
