A large Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv and surrounding areas overnight into August 20, 2026, killed at least 16 people and injured dozens more. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the strikes hit residences, warehouses, a school and a children's hospital.
Local reports put the death toll in the city and region at 13 to 16, with more than 40 wounded. Zelenskyy described the pattern of attacks as a "safari hunt" against civilians and urged partners to supply additional Patriot interceptors.
Ukraine has faced a shortage of air-defence munitions after months of sustained Russian pressure. Moscow appears to be exploiting gaps in coverage to increase the intensity of night-time strikes.
Ukrainian forces said they hit oil facilities in Russia's Tatarstan and Krasnodar regions in response. The broader front continues to see Russian advances in the east, including pressure on remaining fortress cities in Donetsk.
The latest barrage adds to civilian casualties that have risen as interceptor stocks have declined. Zelenskyy has repeatedly asked Western partners for more air-defence systems and ammunition to protect cities.
Russia has not issued a detailed public claim of responsibility for the specific targets, consistent with its pattern of describing strikes as aimed at military or dual-use sites.
