The United States gross national debt crossed $40 trillion for the first time, according to Treasury Department data released on Wednesday. Total public debt outstanding stood at $40.047 trillion as of the close of business on Tuesday.
The figure includes $32.266 trillion held by the public and $7.782 trillion in intra-governmental holdings. Debt has risen by roughly one third in less than five years.
Interest payments on the debt form a growing share of federal spending. Long-term borrowing costs have also climbed in recent sessions, though a Treasury announcement of additional long-term debt buybacks produced a temporary reversal on Wednesday.
Fiscal watchdogs note that the $40 trillion mark arrived less than five months after the debt reached $39 trillion. The total has quadrupled in under two decades after first hitting $1 trillion in 1981.
Borrowing this year alone is on track to exceed $2 trillion, covering military outlays, social programs and other obligations. Tax policy changes and elevated interest rates have constrained revenue relative to outlays.
Economists continue to debate whether the debt trajectory poses an immediate crisis or remains manageable given the size of the US economy. The milestone has drawn fresh attention to the gap between spending and revenue.
