Union Home Minister Amit Shah on August 20 emphasised the need for early resolution of pending water-related issues among southern states. He called for joint meetings that bring together the Ministry of Jal Shakti, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Inter-State Council and the respective state governments.
Shah made the remarks while highlighting the importance of cooperative federalism in managing shared river resources. Several long-standing disputes over river water allocation remain unresolved and affect agriculture, drinking water supply and inter-state relations.
The proposal seeks to create a structured platform for negotiation rather than relying solely on tribunal processes or bilateral talks. Officials familiar with the discussions say the approach aims to reduce delays that have characterised earlier efforts.
Southern states have experienced periodic tension over water sharing, particularly during monsoon shortfalls. Mechanisms that combine technical assessment with political dialogue could help prevent escalation.
Shah also praised developmental progress in the southern region, citing infrastructure and industrial growth as evidence of effective governance. The water agenda formed one part of a broader conversation on coordination between the Centre and states.
Further meetings are expected in the coming weeks. The outcome will depend on the willingness of all parties to accept compromises grounded in hydrological data and equitable principles.
