The Union Cabinet has decided to establish a High Court Bench in Ladakh. Home Minister Amit Shah announced the move on August 20, describing it as a step to improve access to justice in the Union Territory.
The decision aims to reduce the need for litigants to travel long distances to the existing High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. A dedicated bench will handle cases arising within Ladakh more efficiently.
Shah linked the announcement to the Centre’s broader commitment to the all-round development of the region and the protection of its constitutional safeguards. The bench is expected to strengthen the local judicial infrastructure.
Establishing a permanent or circuit bench requires logistical arrangements including courtrooms, staff and administrative support. Details on location and operational timelines will follow the formal notification.
Residents of Ladakh have long sought greater judicial proximity. The approval addresses that demand while integrating the territory more fully into the national judicial framework after its reorganisation as a Union Territory.
The move forms part of a series of administrative steps taken since 2019 to build institutions suited to Ladakh’s geographic and demographic conditions.
