The United States gross national debt has crossed $40 trillion for the first time.
Treasury Department figures released on Wednesday put the total public debt outstanding at $40.047 trillion as of the close of business on Tuesday. Debt held by the public stood at $32.266 trillion. Intra-governmental holdings accounted for the remaining $7.782 trillion.
The milestone arrived earlier than many forecasts had projected. The debt had reached $39 trillion less than five months earlier. Over the past two decades the total has quadrupled.
Several factors pushed the figure higher in recent months. Lost revenue linked to tariffs that courts later invalidated reduced expected inflows. Interest payments on the existing stock of debt continued to rise as longer-term yields stayed elevated. Federal spending on the war with Iran and on social programmes also contributed.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has moved to calm markets by announcing plans to buy back more long-term debt. The 30-year Treasury yield had reached its highest level in two decades before the announcement.
Economists who track fiscal accounts note that the debt-to-GDP ratio now exceeds 120 percent when measured on the gross basis. The primary deficit remains large, and interest costs now form a growing share of the annual budget.
President Donald Trump has said he is not concerned by bond-market volatility and believes interest rates should fall. The administration continues to argue that economic growth will eventually outpace the debt burden.
Whether the $40 trillion figure marks a turning point or simply another step on a long trajectory remains an open question for markets and policymakers. The next major test will come when the Treasury refinances large volumes of maturing securities later this year.
