The surface temperature of the Mediterranean Sea has risen by approximately 2°C above the long-term average this summer.
Satellite measurements and in-situ buoy readings confirm the anomaly across large parts of the basin. The warming has been most pronounced in the western and central Mediterranean, where marine heatwaves have persisted for weeks.
Scientists tracking the phenomenon link the elevated temperatures to a combination of atmospheric circulation patterns and the broader accumulation of heat in the upper ocean. The Mediterranean is a semi-enclosed sea with limited exchange with the Atlantic, which amplifies the effect of prolonged high-pressure systems.
