The Union Cabinet has decided to establish a High Court bench in Ladakh.
Home Minister Amit Shah announced the decision on Thursday, stating that the move would improve access to justice for residents of the Union Territory. The bench will sit under the jurisdiction of the existing High Court structure while providing a permanent presence closer to the population.
Ladakh became a Union Territory in 2019. Since then, litigants have been required to travel long distances to the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh for many matters. The new bench is intended to reduce that burden and to strengthen the judicial infrastructure in the region.
Shah also reiterated the Centre’s commitment to constitutional safeguards and the overall development of Ladakh. The announcement coincides with ongoing discussions about local governance arrangements and the protection of cultural and demographic character.
Judicial access has been a recurring demand from local representatives and bar associations. The establishment of a dedicated bench addresses one concrete institutional gap. Practical details, including the location of the permanent court complex and the strength of judges to be assigned, will be worked out by the judiciary and the Ministry of Law and Justice.
The decision forms part of a broader pattern of institutional expansion in the newer Union Territories. Similar steps have been taken in other regions to bring higher judicial forums closer to citizens.
For residents of Leh and Kargil districts, the practical effect will depend on how quickly the bench becomes operational and how the case-listing system is organised. The formal decision itself marks a clear step toward closing the geographic gap in access to the High Court.
