Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand secured India’s first women’s doubles medal at the BWF World Championships since 2011. The pair, ranked 39 in the world, defeated Jia Yifan and Zhang Shuxian of China in the quarter-finals at the Indira Gandhi Arena in New Delhi.
The result ends a 15-year drought in the discipline at the world level. India has previously claimed medals in other categories, but the women’s doubles podium had remained empty since the 2011 edition.
The tournament is being held on home soil. The Indian pair’s progress has drawn attention to the depth of the current doubles programme under the Badminton Association of India.
Further rounds will determine the colour of the medal. The achievement already marks a concrete step in the long-term effort to broaden India’s medal base beyond the traditional singles focus.
