US President Donald Trump stated that he views the Strait of Hormuz as American territory at present. He made the comment while addressing a campaign rally in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and added that Iran would like a deal but is not ready for the right one.
Trump said the United States had stopped Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and that Washington holds total control over the key energy waterway. Iran’s deputy foreign minister responded that the remarks would be corrected either by circumstances or by Iran.
The comments come as new US economic sanctions on Iran are scheduled for announcement. Both sides have continued hostile rhetoric even as direct fire has paused in some periods of the ongoing conflict.
Iran has granted permission for certain Iraqi oil tankers to pass through the strait after requests from Baghdad. The waterway carries a large share of global oil and liquefied gas supplies.
The exchange keeps pressure elevated on energy markets and on regional shipping routes.
