TikTok will pay $400 million to the United States in one of the largest child privacy settlements on record.
The agreement stems from a 2024 lawsuit that alleged TikTok and parent company ByteDance collected large amounts of data on millions of users under the age of 13. The settlement was announced on August 21.
U.S. authorities said the company violated children’s privacy rules by gathering personal information without proper consent. The payment ranks among the biggest of its kind under U.S. privacy law.
TikTok has faced repeated scrutiny in the United States over data practices and its Chinese ownership. The company has previously agreed to other compliance measures but continues to operate under political pressure in Washington.
