The Tamil Nadu government has dropped plans for a new greenfield airport at Parandur estimated to cost ₹27,400 crore.
The decision follows resistance from local villagers. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam-led administration will now search for an alternative site.
The original proposal had aimed to expand aviation capacity in the Chennai region. Local opposition centred on land acquisition and environmental concerns.
Separately, Chief Minister Vijay launched 130 new AC electric buses in Chennai under the second phase of the city’s electric bus initiative, signalling continued investment in urban public transport.
The airport decision illustrates the practical constraints that large infrastructure projects face when community consent is not secured early.
