Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said India is negotiating trade agreements with countries representing a combined GDP of $15 trillion.
He added that the country is working on free trade agreements with 8-9 more blocs, with the objective of covering 75 percent of global trade.
The statement comes as India pursues a multi-track approach to trade liberalisation while managing existing partnerships. Recent months have seen continued engagement on bilateral and plurilateral fronts.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s forthcoming visit to Canada and the United States for the G20 Finance Ministers meeting provides another channel for economic diplomacy.
Progress on the new negotiations will depend on reciprocal market access offers and domestic political considerations in partner countries.
