Tamil Nadu Drops Parandur Greenfield Airport Plan

The Tamil Nadu government has abandoned plans for a new greenfield airport at Parandur. The project carried an estimated cost of ₹27,400 crore. Officials said the decision followed sustained resistance from local villagers.

The state will now look for an alternative location. The original site had been selected for its proximity to Chennai and available land, yet acquisition and environmental concerns generated prolonged opposition.

Airport capacity in the Chennai region has faced pressure from rising passenger and cargo traffic. A second airport was intended to relieve congestion at the existing facility. The change of site will delay the timeline by several years.

State officials have not yet named candidate locations. Any new proposal will need to clear land acquisition, environmental clearances and central approvals. The episode illustrates the practical difficulty of large infrastructure projects when local consent is incomplete.
