British Prime Minister Hands Storm Shadow Blueprints to Ukraine

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham confirmed on August 24 that the United Kingdom has given Ukraine the classified blueprints for key British-made components of the Storm Shadow cruise missile. The decision came during his first overseas visit as prime minister, timed with Ukraine's Independence Day celebrations in Kyiv.

The air-launched missile has a range of about 550 kilometres and has been used by Ukrainian forces against Russian naval and command targets. France produces a closely related version called Scalp. Both countries share technology. The blueprints will let Ukraine begin work on domestic assembly lines, potentially in partnership with French industry.

Ukrainian officials welcomed the step. One parliamentary committee chair said production could start in months rather than years if resources arrive quickly. Russia described the transfer as adding fuel to the fire and warned of escalation. Burnham rejected the criticism and said British support would continue despite "outrageous threats."

Burnham also signed an agreement to share Ukrainian battlefield data with the UK Ministry of Defence and selected private firms for training AI models. European leaders gathered in Kyiv the same day to discuss further air-defence supplies and long-term security guarantees.

The blueprint transfer shifts part of the production burden closer to the front. Success will depend on Ukrainian industrial capacity, component supply and protection of the new facilities from Russian strikes.
