Spain logs 61 heatwave days and the hottest summer in its 1961 series
AEMET said the peninsula averaged 24.5 C, 0.3 above 2025. Four summer waves plus a six-day September episode put two-thirds of summer under official heatwave conditions.

Spain spent 61 days under official heatwave conditions in 2026, the most since records began. The State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, published the figure on Wednesday. The previous high was 41 days in 2022. Meteorological summer, June through August, also set a temperature record. The peninsula averaged 24.5 C, 0.3 C above 2025 and 2.4 C above the 1991-2020 mean.
Four heatwaves hit the mainland and the Balearic Islands. A fifth, already in meteorological autumn, ran from 2 to 7 September and covered 16 provinces. That September episode is only the fifth in the instrumental series, after 1987, 1988, 2006 and 2016. The Canary Islands had a separate five-day heatwave. Put the summer waves together and two out of every three days from June to August met the agency's heatwave test.
The first wave lasted eight days from 20 to 27 June and reached 42 provinces, the third-widest event in the series after July 2022 and July 2024. The second, from 2 to 24 July, was the most intense, with a temperature anomaly of 3.9 C across 37 provinces. The third ran from 28 July to 20 August and touched 32 provinces. The July and August events, at 23 and 24 days, rank among the longest since at least 1975.
AEMET's other warning is about the calendar. Late May already produced July-like readings across large parts of the country. September then added another six-day wave. The meteorological summer is stretching at both ends. All ten of the hottest summers in the 1961-2026 series have fallen in this century. Seven of the eight hottest have come since 2015.
Heatwave days are not the same as hot days. AEMET uses a threshold that combines temperature, duration and geographic spread. Crossing that line 61 times means hospitals, grids and farms were on alert for most of the season, not only on the afternoon of a record high. The 2022 benchmark of 41 days was already treated as an outlier. 2026 beat it by 20 days and beat last summer's 36 heatwave days by 25.
The agency does not, in Wednesday's note, publish a death toll. Spain's mortality surveillance systems usually lag the weather tables. What the weather tables already show is exposure. A country that had built its summer around 40 heatwave days now has to plan for 60. That is extra weeks of night-time temperatures that do not fall, extra weeks of peak power demand for cooling, and extra weeks when outdoor work in agriculture and construction hits legal heat limits.
Reservoirs and harvests will be the next datasets. AEMET's brief is temperature. Irrigation boards and crop agencies report later. The persistence AEMET flags, rather than a single extreme afternoon, is what dries soil and lifts night-time energy load. A 2.4 C departure from the 1991-2020 summer mean is a climate statistic. Sixty-one heatwave days is an operations statistic for a health ministry and a grid operator.
Neighbouring countries ran their own hot summers. AEMET's claim is narrower and easier to check: within Spain's own series, no year has produced more heatwave days, and no summer since 1961 has been hotter on the mean. Those two records arriving together is the news. One record can be a spike. Two records, plus a September wave, is a season that has changed shape.
The practical question for 2027 planning is whether 61 days is the new ceiling or a step. The series since 2015 suggests the second reading. If seven of the eight hottest summers cluster in a little more than a decade, the planning assumption of 40 heatwave days is already obsolete. Wednesday's bulletin is the agency saying so with its own numbers, not with a forecast.
