Kenya confirmed its first case of Ebola linked to the current Congo outbreak on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, after the patient died in Nairobi late on Monday. Health minister Aden Duale said the man was a Kenyan citizen who had lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo for seven years, and that the virus was the Bundibugyo strain.
Duale told a news conference that the man had been ill for about a month. He reached Kenya by road from Congo to Kampala, spent a night in Uganda, and boarded a Jambojet flight to Nairobi on Saturday. A relative took him to Nairobi Hospital after he had passed through health screening at the airport. The hospital put him in isolation. He had fever, chills, and bleeding under the skin. He died late on Monday.
The contact list is specific. Eight family members are in quarantine. So are 21 health workers who attended him. Authorities are tracing 23 passengers and four crew from the Jambojet flight. President William Ruto's office reported on the quarantine and on burial arrangements. Patrick Amoth, director-general at the health ministry, said the man may have cleared airport screening because medication had masked his symptoms. That is the operational failure in the story. A symptomatic passenger reached a city hospital from an international arrival hall.
Uganda's government spokesperson, Alan Kasujja, answered the transit detail in a text message: "Leave Uganda out of this conversation. We don't have Ebola here." The itinerary Duale gave still includes a night in Kampala. Uganda has not reported a case from this trip. Kenya has.
The Congo outbreak was declared in mid-May and may have started months earlier. Reuters reported that it has infected more than 8,000 people and killed more than 4,000, which would make it the second largest Ebola epidemic on record. Kenya is the fourth country to record a case tied to it. Bundibugyo is not the Zaire strain that caused the 2014-16 West African epidemic. It has a lower case fatality in past outbreaks, and the vaccine stock used against Zaire ebolavirus does not cover it. That is why a single imported death in Nairobi is not a small footnote to a familiar outbreak. The tools that slowed Zaire do not transfer.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization, said on X that the WHO was supporting the Kenyan and Ugandan governments, and he advised against travel restrictions on countries affected by the outbreak. Africa CDC said it was sending a high-level team to Kenya at once, and that the case showed why preparedness across the region has to be kept up. Julien Harneis, the UN's senior Ebola coordinator, told Reuters he expected a solid health response from Kenya.
Nairobi Hospital said it had stepped up infection control, tracing and staff monitoring. The Star in Kenya reported that staff who had contact with the patient were under watch. A private hospital that receives an airport arrival is a different problem from a treatment centre built for an outbreak. The 21 quarantined health workers are the measure of how far the virus got inside the building before isolation held.
The next number that matters is not a model. It is whether any of the eight relatives, the 21 health workers, or the 27 people on the Jambojet manifest develop symptoms inside the incubation window, which for Ebola is usually two to 21 days. Duale has already named the strain, the route and the death. Amoth has named the screening gap. If a second case appears in Nairobi, it will come from that list, not from a general warning about the region.
