A police officer was shot dead and another was wounded on Monday in a clash with suspected illegal miners at La Pampa, in the Inambari district of Madre de Dios, Peru. Infobae identified the dead officer as SO3 Jacson Nima Zeta of the national police, hit in the head. SO3 Joel Ríos Coquinche was hit by gunfire and taken to the regional hospital of Madre de Dios, where his condition was listed as reserved. Police said four suspected members of the group were killed. Officers seized 15 AKM rifles, a pistol and five grenades.
The clash was at kilometre 115 of the Interoceanic Highway, in Inambari, in the province of Tambopata. The operation was run by the Directorate of Special Operations, Diropesp, with other police units. Police said the officers were attacked with weapons of war during the intervention. A highway kilometre marker and a named unit put the incident on the map in a way a general report of clashes in the mining zone does not.
La Pampa is the stretch of Madre de Dios that Peruvian governments have raided, declared interdiction zones, and raided again for more than a decade. Alluvial gold mining along the highway has cleared forest, mercury has gone into the rivers, and armed groups have stayed because the gold moves. An operation that comes back with 15 AKM rifles and five grenades is evidence of the armament on the mining side, not only of a patrol that met men with shotguns. AKM-pattern rifles and grenades are a step above the arms usually logged in a camp raid.
The toll on the police side is one dead and one wounded, with the wounded man's diagnosis reserved, which in Peruvian hospital usage means the doctors have not committed to an outcome. On the other side, Infobae reported four suspects killed. A day log citing a Peruvian outlet had put the dead on that side at three, with one officer dead and another wounded. The Infobae figure, four, is the one tied to a named operation and a named officer. The rifle count, 15 AKMs, a pistol and five grenades, is consistent across the accounts.
Madre de Dios is the department where Peru's environment ministry and the navy have run repeated drives against illegal mining, and where the camps have rebuilt along the same highway. Kilometre 115 is inside the zone those drives have covered. A fresh clash with military-pattern rifles says the camps are still armed after the earlier operations. The gold price is the incentive. Seizing 15 rifles does not seize the dredges, and it does not close the trail that carries the gold out through the same highway.
Nima Zeta's death is the fact the police will mark. A sub-officer shot in the head at a highway marker is a different entry from a raid in which no officer is hit. It raises the case for a larger follow-up operation, and it raises the cost of the next one. Ríos Coquinche's condition will decide whether the wounded column stays at one. The hospital had not given a clearer diagnosis in the first reports.
The arms are the other fact that will travel. Fifteen AKMs and five grenades in one seizure is a quantity that belongs in a report to the interior ministry, not only in a local police note. Whoever supplied them is outside the camp at kilometre 115. The camp is where they were found. The highway is how they arrived. That is the chain Diropesp's next operation would have to walk if the aim is the supply, rather than the next camp on the same road.
