Saudi Arabia won the 27th Gulf Cup on Tuesday, beating the United Arab Emirates 2-0 in Jeddah and taking a first title since 2004. Hammam Al Hammami scored in the 11th minute, a deflected shot from the edge of the box, and Feras Al Brikan made it 2-0 two minutes later from close range. The final was at King Abdullah Sports City. Georgios Donis, the Greek coach, had the side two up before the quarter-hour.
The UAE were given a penalty in the 38th minute. VAR overturned it. After the break, Saudi goalkeeper Mohamed Al Owais stopped Sultan Adil from close range, and Fabio Lima hit the bar in the 88th minute. Saudi Arabia kept a clean sheet in the final and, Reuters reported, through the tournament. A title won without conceding is a rare Gulf Cup line. This one ends a 22-year gap. The last Saudi win was in 2004. The 2026 title is the country's fourth.
The Gulf Cup is the tournament of the Arab states on the Gulf: Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and, when politics allow, Iraq and Yemen in the wider invitations of recent editions. It is not a World Cup qualifier. It is a regional title with a crowded history of hosts and of boycotts, and a trophy that Qatar and Kuwait have held more often than the current Saudi generation has. A 22-year wait is long enough that most of the side Donis fielded were not born, or not in school, when Saudi Arabia last won it.
Al Hammami's opener was a deflection, which is a kinder way of saying the UAE defence did not clear the edge of the box. Al Brikan's second, two minutes later, was the one that settled the final. A team that scores twice before the 15th minute in a final, and then keeps the sheet clean, has done the difficult part early. The UAE's response was the overturned penalty and Lima's bar. Neither became a goal. Al Owais's save from Adil was the moment the second half could have changed.
Donis has been in the Saudi job through a period in which the national team has been rebuilt around players from the domestic league and from the clubs the Public Investment Fund has loaded with overseas signings. The Gulf Cup is the competition those players can win while the World Cup qualifying path runs on a different calendar. A regional title does not change the FIFA ranking by much. It does change the mood of a federation that has waited since 2004.
The clean-sheet note is the tactical fact worth keeping. A side that does not concede in a short tournament has either been drawn against weak attacks or has defended as a unit for every minute. The final suggests the second. The UAE reached the match, pressed after falling behind, and still did not score. VAR took away one route to a goal. Al Owais took away another. The bar took away a third.
Jeddah's King Abdullah Sports City is a club ground that the federation uses for nights when the crowd is the point. A home final, two goals in three minutes, and a first trophy in 22 years is the night the federation wanted from the bid to host. The players who scored them, Al Hammami and Al Brikan, are the names on the result. Al Owais is the name on the sheet that stayed blank.
The next test for this group is not another Gulf Cup. It is the qualifying and friendly calendar that decides whether a regional title was a peak or a step. Donis has the trophy. He does not have, from this match, a measure against a side outside the Gulf. That measure comes later. Tuesday's measure was the UAE, and it was met inside 13 minutes.
