The Karnataka government has formed a six-member Special Investigation Team to probe an alleged inter-state fake medicine racket uncovered in Bengaluru. Four people have been held in connection with the case, which involves counterfeit drugs valued at Rs 4.91 crore.
The SIT was constituted on August 20. Officials said the network allegedly produced and distributed spurious medicines, including products mimicking branded pharmaceuticals such as Pfizer formulations.
Investigators are examining supply chains that may extend beyond Karnataka. The racket came to light through enforcement action that recovered stock and documentation pointing to organised manufacture and distribution.
Public health authorities have warned of the risks posed by counterfeit drugs, which can lack active ingredients or contain harmful substances. The probe aims to map the full extent of the operation and identify additional links.
The formation of the SIT reflects the seriousness attached to pharmaceutical crime. Similar cases in other states have shown that such networks often exploit gaps in regulation and distribution monitoring.
Authorities continue to appeal for information that could help locate remaining stock or additional suspects. Medical professionals have been advised to remain alert for unusual packaging or pricing of commonly prescribed medicines.
