A federal judge has struck down a key visa ban imposed by the Trump administration, the latest judicial setback to the president’s immigration agenda.
The ruling, issued late in the week, found the restrictions exceeded statutory authority and failed to meet procedural requirements. The administration is expected to seek a stay and appeal.
Separately, the Supreme Court declined on Friday to halt construction of a $400 million White House ballroom project, allowing work to continue while a historic preservation lawsuit proceeds. A lower court had ordered a pause; the temporary stay keeps demolition and building activity under way.
Both decisions land amid broader tension between the executive branch and the courts over immigration enforcement, federal property and administrative process. The visa ban had targeted categories of entrants the White House described as security risks. Plaintiffs argued the measures lacked individualised assessment and adequate notice.
Implementation of the ballroom project has already altered the East Wing footprint. Preservation groups continue to press for permanent injunctive relief, arguing irreversible harm to the historic complex.
The twin rulings illustrate the pace at which policy disputes are moving through the federal judiciary in the second half of 2026.
