China Postpones Chang'e-7 Lunar Mission Seeking Water Ice at South Pole

China has postponed its Chang'e-7 mission to the Moon's south pole. The China Manned Space Agency announced on Sunday that the probe does not meet launch conditions and cannot fly within the scheduled window this year.
The decision followed a comprehensive assessment under the principles of prudence, reliability and absolute mission success. The spacecraft was to lift off on a Long March 5 rocket from the Wenchang Space Launch Site in Hainan province as early as Sunday or Monday.
Chang'e-7 carries an orbiter, lander, rover and hopper. Its main goal is to search for water ice in permanently shadowed craters near the lunar south pole. That resource is critical for any sustained human presence because it can supply drinking water, oxygen and rocket propellant.
A Thai instrument team had linked the delay in part to Tropical Storm Narra in the South China Sea. Launch windows for polar landings are tight because of sunlight and orbital geometry. A short delay can push the next opportunity into 2027.
The United States and China both prioritise the south pole for future bases. NASA's Artemis programme and commercial landers have also targeted the region. An earlier US commercial attempt to drill for ice failed after a hard landing.
Chinese state media reported the postponement without detailing technical issues beyond the general assessment. The agency emphasised that safety takes precedence over schedule.
Chang'e-7 forms part of China's broader lunar programme that has already achieved sample return and far-side landing. A successful south-pole mission would strengthen its position in the emerging competition for lunar resources and potential international partnerships.
No new launch date has been announced. Planners will wait for the next suitable window once the probe and ground systems meet the required criteria.
