Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir Visits Tehran for Regional Security Talks

Pakistan's Army Chief General Asim Munir arrives in Tehran on Monday for talks focused on regional peace and security, Iran's Foreign Ministry confirmed on Sunday.

Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the visit continues efforts to stabilise the region. Munir is expected to meet senior Iranian military and political officials during the short trip.

Pakistan and Iran share a long border and have faced common challenges including cross-border militancy, smuggling and the wider effects of conflict in Afghanistan and the Middle East. Both countries have sought to manage differences while expanding economic and security cooperation.

The timing coincides with heightened tension over Iran's confrontation with the United States and ongoing instability in Gaza and elsewhere. Pakistan has maintained a careful balance in its relations with Iran, the Gulf states and the West.

Previous high-level military contacts have produced agreements on border management and intelligence sharing. Officials on both sides have described those mechanisms as useful but incomplete.

No detailed agenda was released. Iranian statements emphasised the theme of regional security without specifying concrete outcomes. Pakistani media noted the visit as part of regular military diplomacy.

The meeting occurs against the backdrop of broader shifts in South and West Asian alignments. India's National Security Advisor is in Beijing at the same time, and other regional capitals are active with their own consultations.

Results of the talks will be measured by any new practical steps on the border or joint statements that clarify positions on current conflicts. Both sides have incentives to keep channels open even when public positions diverge.
