ICMR Confirms No New H1N1 Strain Circulating in India

The Indian Council of Medical Research stated on Sunday that the Influenza A (H1N1) viruses circulating in India belong to the A/Missouri/11/2025 (H1N1) pdm09-like strain. No new strain has been identified.
ICMR clarified that existing vaccines are sufficient and there is no cause for panic. Cases have been reported in several states including Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, but the genetic profile matches known variants already covered by the current vaccine formulation.
Health authorities continue routine surveillance through the integrated disease surveillance programme. Hospitals have been advised to maintain standard infection-control measures and to test patients with severe respiratory symptoms.
H1N1 has circulated in India since the 2009 pandemic. Seasonal peaks occur during the monsoon and winter months. Most infections remain mild, though vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women and those with underlying conditions face higher risk of complications.
The clarification followed reports of rising case numbers in some urban centres. Public messaging emphasises hand hygiene, mask use in crowded settings when symptomatic, and timely medical care for high-risk individuals.
Vaccine stocks for the current season remain available through public and private channels. ICMR and the Ministry of Health will continue genomic monitoring to detect any shift that would require an update to the vaccine composition.
No unusual severity or resistance patterns have been observed. The agency advised against speculative claims about new strains that are not supported by laboratory data.
