Ballistic missiles hit Kyiv before dawn, with damage reported in four districts
Explosions struck Kyiv early Wednesday, including a second wave around 5:12 a.m., after the air force warned of ballistic missiles from Bryansk and the south. Klitschko reported damage in Obolonskyi, Podilskyi, Darnytskyi and Shevchenkivskyi. No casualty figure was given. Zelensky had warned the night before of a large strike.

Ballistic missiles reached Kyiv in the early hours of Wednesday, with a second wave of blasts reported around 5:12 a.m. local time. A Kyiv Post journalist in the capital heard several strong explosions after the Ukrainian Air Force warned that ballistic missiles were headed for the city. Mayor Vitali Klitschko and the Kyiv City Military Administration reported damage in four districts. No casualty figure was published in the first accounts.
The districts named are Obolonskyi, Podilskyi, Darnytskyi and Shevchenkivskyi. In Obolonskyi the strike was recorded in an area of non-residential development. In Podilskyi, warehouse buildings were hit and damaged. In Darnytskyi, burning debris fell on open ground, and later damage was recorded at a garage cooperative. In Shevchenkivskyi another strike hit a non-residential area. The pattern, on these reports, is debris and warehouse hits rather than a confirmed strike on a residential block. That can change as daylight inspections finish. It is what the city administration had on the board by morning.
The air force warnings fill in the launch picture. Missiles were tracked toward Kyiv, Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia, with threats detected from Russia's Bryansk region and from the south. Monitoring channels reported three Tu-160 strategic bombers leaving the Belaya air base, and said cruise missiles were likely to be in Ukrainian airspace after 3 a.m. A further ballistic warning came shortly before the 5:12 a.m. blasts. Jet-powered drones were reported over the northern Kyiv region, and cruise missiles over Kharkiv and Poltava. The night was a mixed package: ballistic shots at the capital, cruise missiles on other axes, and drones on the northern approach.
President Volodymyr Zelensky had used his nightly address on Tuesday to say there was updated intelligence on Russian preparations for a massive strike. He told residents to take missile alerts seriously, and he said Ukrainian forces would answer as far as their defences allowed. He also tied that answer to continued weapons deliveries from partners. The strike followed the warning by a matter of hours. It does not, by itself, confirm the scale he described. A massive strike, in the usage of this war, means a large mixed salvo across several cities. Wednesday's confirmed public detail is Kyiv plus warnings for Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia, not a nationwide damage tally.
Zaporizhzhia already has a separate entry on this week's ledger. On Tuesday the regional military administration said a man of 47 was killed in a strike on a warehouse, after a bridge attack the night before injured five. Wednesday's air-force warning of ballistic missiles toward that city is a continuation, not the same incident. Folding the two into one toll would double-count. Kyiv's morning report and Zaporizhzhia's Tuesday death are different places and different hours.
What the capital's account leaves open is the intercept rate. The air force said defences were working. It did not say how many missiles were launched, how many were shot down, or how many fell as debris. Debris in Darnytskyi is consistent with an intercept whose wreckage came down, and also with a missile that broke up short of a target. The city administration has not assigned the garage-cooperative damage to either cause. Residents were told to stay in shelters through the second wave.
The practical consequence sits with the air-defence stock and with the bomber sortie from Belaya. A Tu-160 launch that produces cruise missiles over Kharkiv and Poltava, plus ballistic shots at Kyiv from Bryansk, is a night that spends interceptors in more than one city. Zelensky's line about partner deliveries is the replenishment side of that spend. The open question on Wednesday morning is the casualty list the districts have not yet closed, and whether Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia took impacts after the warnings that named them.
