Apple unveils iPhone Duo, a $1,999 foldable that opens like a passport

Apple put a foldable iPhone on a stage on Wednesday for the first time. The device is called iPhone Duo. It opens like a passport, runs two screens off one A20 Pro chip, and starts at $1,999 for 256 GB. Pre-orders open on 16 October. Ships on 23 October.

John Ternus, Apple's new chief executive, presented the phone in a 75-minute recorded session at Apple Park titled "Surprise and Shine." He said other foldables "feel like two phones awkwardly stuck together" and that Duo was meant to change how a folding handset is used, not only how it looks. The inner panel is a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display. The cover panel is 5.4 inches. Both support ProMotion and peak brightness of 3,000 nits. Apple applied a nano-texture finish and a scratch-resistant coating over a titanium plate to hide the crease and cut glare.

The form factor is the point. Folded, Duo is roughly passport-sized and sits in a pocket. Opened, it can run two apps side by side or one app across the large panel, including a vertical tablet-style layout Apple borrowed from iPad. StandBy has been rebuilt for the cover screen. Later this year the inner display will accept Apple Pencil. Touch ID sits in the side button. Unlocking also works from an Apple Watch. There is no physical SIM tray. Like last year's iPhone Air, Duo is eSIM only.

Two batteries sit in the two halves. Apple quotes 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and 44 hours on the outer display. The chip is the same A20 Pro used in iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, built on a 2-nanometre process with a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. A C2 cellular modem handles the radio. A new display engine drives both panels at once.

The camera set is narrower than the Pro slab phones. A 48-megapixel Fusion main camera includes an optical-quality 2x mode. A 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera handles wide and macro work. There is no separate telephoto module. The cover screen carries a 12-megapixel Center Stage front camera. The inner FaceTime camera sits under the display. Rear-camera selfies preview on the outer panel, the usual foldable trick. Video goes to 4K at 120 frames a second.

Storage pricing climbs fast. 512 GB is $2,199. 1 TB is $2,599. 2 TB is $3,199. Two colours ship at launch. Accessories include a Folio with a kickstand and a two-part case that covers each half. The $1,999 floor sits $100 above Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Google's Pixel 11 Pro Fold, and $100 below Samsung's square Z Fold 8 Ultra. It is $700 above the cheapest iPhone 18 Pro announced the same day.

Foldable phones have been on sale since 2018. Counterpoint Research counted nearly 20 million units shipped last year, under 2 percent of global smartphone shipments. Samsung still leads that sliver. Apple is late on purpose. The company waited until it could sell a crease it was willing to put an Apple logo on, and until it had a chip and battery pair that could run two panels without looking like a prototype. Whether buyers pay $2,000 for that wait is the commercial test.

Software will decide more than the hinge. Split apps, half-folded table modes and Pencil support only work if developers rebuild layouts. Apple showed those modes on Wednesday. It did not show a catalogue of third-party apps already redesigned. The first 90 days after 23 October will reveal whether Duo is a new iPhone or a large iPhone that folds.

Ternus is also on trial. This is his first September event as chief executive. The recorded format, the closing reveal and the price all follow Apple's old script. The product does not. For 19 years the iPhone has been a glass slab. Duo is the first time the company's main product changes shape. That is the fact that matters more than the nit count.

Component suppliers will feel the change first. A titanium plate, two batteries, an under-display camera and a dual-panel engine are new line items. Yields on foldable glass have improved since the first Galaxy Fold cracked in reviewers' pockets, but Apple's volume, if it materialises, will test that supply chain in a way Samsung's smaller runs did not. The October 16 pre-order queue is the first hard number. Until then, Duo is a specification sheet and a stage line.

Apple still sells more phones than anyone else in the high-price band. A $1,999 foldable does not have to win the 2 percent foldable niche to matter. It has to keep iPhone buyers inside the store when they want a bigger screen without carrying an iPad. That is the job Ternus gave the device on Wednesday. The hinge will either do that job or become a one-generation experiment.
