Algeria severs ties with the UAE and closes its airspace from Friday

Algeria cut diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates on Thursday, 10 September 2026. The foreign ministry in Algiers said it had "exhausted all means of preserving bilateral relations" after what it called a series of provocative or hostile acts. It named none of them in the statement carried by state television and the official news agency.

Ambassador Yousef Saif Khamis Subaa Al-Ali was summoned to the ministry, told of the decision, and given 48 hours to comply. Later on Thursday, Ennahar TV reported a defence ministry order closing Algerian airspace to all UAE-registered civilian and military aircraft from Friday. Commercial flights between the UAE and Algiers are exempt until the current contract ends at the close of 2026.

The UAE foreign ministry said it hoped the break would be temporary and that Abu Dhabi remained committed to ties between the two peoples. Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, posted that relations should rest on "rationality, communication and clarity of interests" rather than "riddles and signals that require decoding." He did not name Algeria.

The two states have been on opposite sides of several files for years. Algeria rejects normalisation with Israel. The UAE signed the Abraham Accords and keeps an embassy in Tel Aviv. Morocco, Algeria's western rival, also normalised under that framework. The UAE backs Morocco's claim to Western Sahara. Algeria backs the Polisario Front and hosts Sahrawi institutions. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has accused Abu Dhabi of interfering in Algerian and regional affairs on more than one occasion.

Cutting ties is rarer than recalling an ambassador. It closes the embassy channel and forces consular work onto protecting powers if any are named. The airspace ban is the part with a timetable. UAE carriers that use Algerian air as a shortcut between the Gulf and West Africa or Europe will have to route around it from Friday, except for the Algiers city pairs that run to 31 December.

Algeria is a large gas supplier to Europe and a military power in the Maghreb. The UAE is a logistics and finance hub that has spent the past decade placing itself in Horn of Africa ports, Yemen's southern politics, and North African media and investment. A rupture between them does not by itself change the gas flow to Italy or Spain. It does remove one of the few remaining Gulf-Maghreb diplomatic bridges at a moment when the UAE's crown prince is due in Delhi for the same BRICS weekend that brings Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping and Masoud Pezeshkian to India.

Algiers still has not published the specific acts that triggered the note. Until it does, the public record is the 48-hour order, the Friday air ban, and Gargash's reply about riddles. Those three items are enough to move aircraft and diplomats. They are not yet enough to write the cause.
