Russian strikes kill civilians across Ukraine as Kyiv hits gas plants in the Arctic

Russian drone and missile strikes over 9 and 10 September 2026 killed civilians in several Ukrainian regions while Ukraine said it had hit gas plants deep in the Russian Arctic. Al Jazeera, citing local authorities, reported at least seven dead in the latest overnight wave. Separate regional tallies released on Wednesday and Thursday do not fold into a single audited number. They do describe the same pattern: apartment blocks, a mall, a market, a border post, a port.

Sumy Governor Oleh Hryhorov said two people were killed and 20 injured when a strike hit a shopping mall in the regional capital. Three girls aged 15 and 16 were among the wounded. Two women, aged 60 and 79, later died in hospital after an 8 September drone attack on a suburban train in Sumy district. Dnipropetrovsk Governor Oleksandr Hanzha reported eight injured in Kryvyi Rih and the Nikopol district. Acting Mykolaiv Governor Heorhii Reshetilov said four people were killed and 19 injured in strikes on port, industrial and civilian sites in the regional capital.

In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a drone hit a 24-storey block in Darnytskyi district around 8 a.m. on 9 September and set fire to the 12th floor. Police said a nine-storey building in Dniprovskyi district was also hit that evening. A 70-year-old woman was killed. A 74-year-old woman, a 69-year-old man, a 16-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy were hurt. The city military administration raised the day's injured count in the capital to 14, including two children. Kyiv regional head Tymur Tkachenko said 32 properties were damaged across Fastiv and Bucha districts.

At the Starokozache crossing on the Moldova border, Odesa Governor Oleh Kiper said two civilians were killed and three wounded. Moldova halted passenger and vehicle traffic at that post. Ukrainian border guards said Russia has now struck five crossings in recent weeks. In Khmelnytskyi, drones hit a market. Four rescuers were hurt in the fire and secondary explosions.

The renewed pressure on Kyiv followed a short pause during a visit by U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. On 8 September a larger missile and drone attack on the capital killed five people and injured 35, city officials said. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was travelling to Canada for talks on air defence and winter energy cover as the new strikes landed.

Ukraine said it had answered by hitting gas infrastructure in the Russian Arctic. Moscow called the claim an attempt to split Kyiv from partners. Britain has separately accused Russia of circulating a story that Ukraine planned to start a war between Russia and the United Kingdom. Those information claims sit beside the casualty lists. They do not change the lists.

Winter is the next deadline. Energy plants, substations and apartment boilers are the targets that decide whether cities hold heat. The mall in Sumy and the crossing at Starokozache show a second aim: to raise the cost of ordinary movement. Governors will keep issuing overnight counts. The Arctic plants, if damaged as Kyiv says, will show up in Russian output figures with a lag.
