Russian forces struck a bridge over the Dnipro in the city of Zaporizhzhia overnight on Tuesday, and five people were hurt, two of them Red Cross workers, the head of the regional military administration said.
Mykhailo Semikin said traffic on the damaged bridge was stopped. The State Emergency Service reported a separate hit on Monday evening, a drone into a nine-storey block in the city. An apartment on the fifth floor and a balcony on the sixth caught fire. Two people were injured there. In Kyiv the same night, the roof of a school building in the Obolon district caught fire after a strike. No one was hurt in that fire.
The city bridge is not the nuclear station. Rosatom said on Monday that drones had hit a laboratory and a waste-processing building at the Zaporizhzhia plant, and that a driver bringing food had been killed. Kyiv had not commented on that claim. Tuesday's strike, as Semikin described it, is on a road bridge in the regional capital, well away from the plant at Enerhodar. Treating the two as one incident would mix a contested claim about the station with a local official's account of a city crossing.
The Dnipro bridges have become a target set of their own this month. Since the start of October, Russian forces have hit the Northern and Southern bridges in Kyiv more than once. The capital has nine bridges over the river. None of them had been struck before this month, on the account Meduza compiled from local reports. A bridge is a replacement problem as much as a damage problem. Traffic that cannot cross has to use the next span, and the next span is then the obvious target. Shutting one crossing in Zaporizhzhia does that on a smaller scale. The city has fewer alternatives than Kyiv.
The Red Cross injuries are the detail that fixes the strike as a civilian incident in Semikin's account. Two staff of a medical relief organisation were among the five hurt. He did not name them. The emergency service's separate report, of two injured in the residential block on Monday evening, is a second civilian count in the same city inside a day. Adding the two figures would double-count if any person appears in both, and the reports do not say. The safe reading is two incidents, five hurt at the bridge and two hurt at the block.
Obolon's school roof is the Kyiv end of the same night. An education building on fire, with no casualties, is a different outcome from a bridge with five injured. It is the same method: a strike on a structure that is not a trench. Kyiv has spent the early part of October patching river crossings. Zaporizhzhia now has one of its own to patch.
What is not in Tuesday's local reports is a Russian statement on the city bridge. The strike is attested by the regional head and by the emergency service's account of the residential hit the evening before. Repair time, the span's load limit, and the names of the injured were not published. Until they are, the operational fact is the one Semikin gave: the bridge is shut, five people are hurt, and two of them work for the Red Cross.
Repair of a river bridge is a matter of days or weeks, not hours, once the span itself is hit. Semikin did not say whether the deck, a pier or the approach was the damaged part. Traffic stopped is the operational fact. Ambulance routes and supply runs that used the crossing have to move to whatever span is still open. In a city that has already taken a residential hit the evening before, that diversion is the civilian cost on top of the five injuries.
The Red Cross presence fixes a second record. Relief staff injured on a city bridge are not combatants in any ordinary account of the strike. Their names were not released. The organisation had not, in the reports available on Tuesday, published its own note. Until it does, Semikin's count stands as the public figure: five hurt, two of them Red Cross, bridge closed.
