Wakefield Trinity beat Warrington Wolves 23-10 at Old Trafford on 3 October to win the Super League Grand Final, the club's first title in the competition. Attendance was 71,728. Liam Moore refereed. Tom Johnstone took the Rob Burrow Award. Sky Sports carried the match live, with highlights on BBC iPlayer.
The scoring was front-loaded. Wakefield led 19-0 at half-time. Tries came from Scott in the 11th minute, Vagana in the 25th and Tevaga in the 35th. Jowitt converted all three. Jack Sinfield added a drop goal in the 38th minute. Warrington's reply was two tries from Arron Lindop, in the 46th and 72nd minutes, with Irwin converting the first. Johnstone's try in the 59th minute made it 23-6 before Lindop's second. Corey Hall was in the sin bin from the 43rd to the 53rd minute, so Wakefield's second-half try came while they were a player down.
The final closed a fortnight that had already broken the club's ceiling. On 26 September Wakefield beat Wigan 33-6 in the play-off semi-final, ending a 16-game Wigan winning run and a treble bid. Wigan had the Challenge Cup and the League Leaders' Shield. Johnstone scored twice in that semi, with further tries from Sinfield, Hall and Rodwell, and Jowitt kicked six goals. Wakefield had been a Championship side as recently as 2024. The Grand Final was their first. Daryl Powell is the head coach. Matt Ellis is the owner who funded the climb.
Warrington had the second half and still left with one score after the restart and one late try. A 19-point hole at the interval, against a side that had just put 33 on Wigan, was the match in practical terms. The Lindop double kept the Wolves from a shutout. It did not change the possession of the trophy.
Old Trafford has been the Grand Final venue for years, and 71,728 is a football-ground crowd for a rugby league decider. The figure matters because Wakefield's support base is smaller than Wigan's or Warrington's. A first title, reached by beating the League Leaders and then the other finalist, is a different claim from a home play-off win. The Rob Burrow Award to Johnstone ties the individual prize to the winger who scored in both the semi and the final.
The season's shape for the beaten side is the other half of the result. Wigan leave with two trophies and a semi-final loss. Warrington leave with a Grand Final appearance and a 13-point defeat. Wakefield leave with the one prize neither of those clubs has this year. Powell's side did it within two seasons of promotion. That interval, 2024 in the Championship and 2026 as champions, is the number that will be tested next spring, when the same squad has to live with a target it did not carry in March.
The scoreline to keep is 23-10, 19-0 at the break, Johnstone on 59 minutes, Lindop twice for Warrington, Jowitt three goals from three, Sinfield the drop goal, Hall ten minutes in the bin, Moore the referee, 71,728 in the ground. The title is the first. The next season is the one that says whether the fortnight was a peak or a level.
The try chart is also a coaching chart. Three first-half tries from three different scorers, Scott, Vagana and Tevaga, then a half-back's drop goal, is a spread attack rather than a single-runner finish. Johnstone, the winger who had already scored twice against Wigan, was the only Wakefield try-scorer after the interval. Warrington's entire return was one forward, Lindop, twice. A side that can only answer through one runner, against a side that scored through four, is the structural difference in the 23-10.
Powell's record over the two seasons is the context the score does not show by itself. Promotion from the Championship in 2024, a semi-final win over the League Leaders, and a Grand Final win over Warrington, in that order, is the sequence. Ellis's ownership is the money behind the recruitment that made the sequence possible. Neither fact is a guarantee about 2027. Both are why 23-10 at Old Trafford is a first title rather than a defence of one.
