US Carries Out Limited Defensive Strikes on Iran's Qeshm Island on Eve of Midterms
US forces struck targets on Iran's Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday in what officials described as a limited defensive response to Iranian surface-to-air missiles fired at American aircraft. The action came as President Trump and Vice-President Vance publicly spoke of progress toward a diplomatic deal.

United States forces conducted limited strikes on Iran's Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, 2 November 2026, US officials said. The action was described as defensive and aimed at Iranian surface-to-air missile systems that had targeted American aircraft. Iranian state media reported several explosions on the island overnight.
The strikes were first reported by the Wall Street Journal and confirmed by Reuters and CNN. Officials characterised them as limited in scope and not a return to the larger combat operations that occurred earlier in 2026. One official noted that similar unpublicised strikes had taken place in recent weeks. The Pentagon referred questions to US Central Command, which did not immediately comment.
Context of the Ongoing Conflict
The strikes occurred on the eve of US midterm elections and while Trump administration officials publicly emphasised diplomacy. Earlier on Monday, Vice-President JD Vance told reporters that he and President Trump felt optimistic about the prospects for a negotiated settlement with Iran. Trump himself, when asked whether he had considered resuming strikes after the midterms, replied "no".
Oil prices rose in early Asian trading on Tuesday after reports of the strikes. Brent crude gained about 0.5 percent to around $105 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate rose by a similar margin. Markets remain sensitive to any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of global oil trade passes.
Official Characterisation and Iranian Response
US officials stressed that the strikes were a response to Iranian forces using surface-to-air missiles against American assets and were intended to protect those assets. Iranian media described the explosions without immediately assigning responsibility. The island of Qeshm sits in the Strait of Hormuz, close to Iranian naval and air-defence installations.
The episode adds to a pattern of intermittent, limited exchanges since the broader conflict earlier in the year. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been reported to favour additional strikes after the US midterms, according to regional officials. For now, both Washington and Tehran have signalled interest in continued talks even as kinetic activity continues at a low level.
Electoral and Strategic Implications
The timing places the strikes in the middle of a US political cycle in which the cost of living, including energy prices, has been a central voter concern. Republican candidates have had to address the economic effects of the Iran conflict on the campaign trail. Whether the limited strikes affect turnout or messaging remains to be seen once results begin to arrive.
Qeshm's location makes any military activity there immediately relevant to shipping and energy markets. The combination of defensive strikes and public optimism about a deal leaves the trajectory of the conflict dependent on both military restraint and the outcome of the midterms.
