India’s Unified Payments Interface has completed a decade as the world’s largest real-time payments system by volume.
Launched in 2016, UPI processed fewer than 100,000 transactions in its first month. It now handles more than 2,300 crore transactions monthly. The system underpins everyday payments ranging from street vendors to large merchants and has become central to financial inclusion efforts.
UPI’s open architecture allows banks, fintechs and payment apps to interoperate on a common platform. Users can transfer money using mobile numbers, QR codes or virtual payment addresses without sharing sensitive bank details. The model has been studied and adapted in several other countries; UPI-linked systems or partnerships now operate in 11 markets.
The anniversary coincides with continued growth in digital commerce and government pushes toward a less-cash economy. Challenges remain around rural connectivity, cybersecurity and the sustainability of zero-fee models for smaller participants, yet the platform’s scale and reliability have made it a reference point for real-time payment infrastructure globally.
