Astronomers Discover Rare ‘Mega-Earth’ Exoplanet Orbiting Almost Perpendicular to Its Star

A team of U.S. astronomers has identified Gliese 523b, a young ultra-dense planet they describe as a rare “mega-Earth.” The world orbits its star on a plane that is almost perpendicular to the star’s spin axis—an extreme tilt that is difficult to explain with conventional planet-formation theory.
Mega-Earths are larger and denser than typical rocky planets yet smaller than ice giants. Gliese 523b’s combination of high density and polar orbit suggests a turbulent early history, possibly involving collisions or gravitational interactions that flipped the planet’s path after it formed.
The discovery adds to a growing catalogue of systems that deviate from the neat, coplanar arrangements seen in our own solar system. Such outliers force theorists to refine models of how planetary systems assemble and evolve in the first few hundred million years.
Observations of the system continue. Further measurements of the planet’s atmosphere, if any, and of the star’s residual disk could reveal more about the processes that produced this unusual geometry.
Every new extreme exoplanet expands the range of what nature can produce and reminds us that our own solar system is only one of many possible outcomes.
