Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy stated on November 1 that two oil tankers exploded after striking mines while traveling through an unauthorized route in the Strait of Hormuz. The report came as Iranian negotiators left talks in Doha with Qatari mediators aimed at ending the war that began earlier in 2026. A draft proposal is circulating and a follow-up meeting remains possible.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the basis of the discussions is a seven-step plan Iran prepared in September to reopen the strait. Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei told the country’s three top commanders on Saturday that any renewed attack by the United States and Israel must be met with an immediate and effective response without geographical limitations. The statement was released by Khamenei’s office.
President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke by phone on Saturday about the state of U.S. negotiations with Iran and the timing of any return to combat. Trump has said publicly that the conflict could end soon, either through a diplomatic deal or further military action, and has warned that the United States might have to give Tehran “the hammer.” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi that dialogue is the way to resolve Middle East conflicts and that China supports Iran’s sovereignty and security.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical chokepoint for oil shipments. Disruptions have contributed to elevated crude prices in recent months. Brent crude has traded in a wide range, with recent settlements reported between roughly $107 and $117 a barrel amid the ongoing hostilities. A full blockade could push prices substantially higher, according to market commentary.
Israeli strikes in Gaza on November 2 killed at least three people and wounded others, according to local health officials. Since the October 2025 ceasefire arrangement, more than 1,500 Palestinians have been reported killed in subsequent Israeli attacks. The broader regional conflict continues to shape energy markets, shipping insurance rates, and diplomatic calendars in Washington, Tehran, and Doha.
No detailed casualty or ownership information on the two tankers has been released beyond the Iranian Navy statement. Independent verification of the mine strikes has not been published by neutral shipping monitors. The sequence of events around the vessels and the precise status of the seven-step plan remain the immediate open points for the next round of talks.
