Trump nominates Wesley Hunt as ambassador to Saudi Arabia

President Donald Trump nominated Representative Wesley Hunt of Texas on 14 September to be ambassador to Saudi Arabia, filling a post that has been vacant since Trump returned to office in January 2025. The name went to the Senate in a batch that also included acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao for the permanent Navy job and Heidi Overton as Food and Drug Administration commissioner.

Hunt is a second-term Houston Republican and a retired Army captain. He is a West Point graduate. He served eight years on active duty, including deployments to Iraq and two years as a diplomatic liaison officer in Saudi Arabia. He is not standing again for his House seat after a distant third-place finish in this year's Republican Senate primary, which Ken Paxton won.

On X he called the nomination "the honour of a lifetime." He wrote that he had served in the region in combat and as a liaison and understood the weight of the posting. "Service has always defined my life," he added. He noted that his siblings also graduated from West Point and that his immediate family has more than 60 years of military service among them.

An empty chair in a war year

In Trump's first term the Riyadh embassy was held by retired General John Abizaid, a former commander of US Central Command. The second-term gap has lasted eight months while the United States has been at war with Iran and while Houthi forces have seized the Hanish islands and struck Saudi infrastructure, including the East-West oil pipeline that feeds Yanbu.

If the Senate confirms him, Hunt would arrive as Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is asking Washington for more military help and as Gulf states have postponed talks with Iran on a temporary Hormuz lane. Saudi officials traced the pipeline drones to Maysan in Iraq. Yanbu's stored crude has been described by traders as five to seven days of exports if the line stays shut.

Hunt has used the Saudi file on the campaign trail. He has said he was in the kingdom when US forces killed Osama bin Laden in 2011 and that he stayed off the compound for two weeks afterward because of the risk of reprisals against American personnel in Riyadh.

The calendar problem

Confirmation requires the Senate. The chamber has about two weeks of session left before the 3 November midterms. A contested foreign-relations hearing can eat that window. A quiet hearing can clear a career officer and a former liaison in a single stack of nominations. Hunt is both a political ally (he endorsed Trump in 2022 and spoke at the 2024 convention) and a man with a specific Saudi tour on his record. That mix usually speeds a file. It can also invite a hearing about the war rather than about the nominee.

The National newspaper, quoting the White House process, said the nomination needs approval and described Hunt as Trump's choice to reassure a Gulf ally. Reuters put the same fact more dryly: the job has been empty since January, and the nominee is a veteran who is leaving the House.

Ambassadors do not reopen pipelines. They sit in the room when a host government asks what Washington will do if the next drone wave comes from Iraqi soil rather than from Yemen. That is the job Hunt has been nominated to take, in a capital that has been without a confirmed American ambassador for the entire second Trump term.
