Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed Saturday evening that fatalities and injuries resulted from an incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in eastern Alberta. “I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base,” he said in a statement. He did not give numbers and described the situation as still active and delicate. An investigation will follow once the immediate response ends.
Wainwright RCMP received a call for assistance around 4 p.m. Early reports described a fire at a training area on the range. The fire spread rapidly in high winds and crossed the base fence into the Municipal District of Wainwright No. 61. Firefighters from multiple jurisdictions worked to contain it south of Township Road 44-0. No evacuation order had been issued by late Saturday. STARS Air Ambulance dispatched two aircraft from Edmonton and Saskatoon. Emergency Health Services Alberta supported ground transport.
Prime Minister Mark Carney called it “a serious incident creating a major fire.” Alberta Premier Danielle Smith described the event as significant and tragic and said it was affecting military personnel. McGuinty said he could not recall a similar incident at a Canadian base in recent memory. CFB Wainwright is one of the busiest army training bases in the country, located about 180 kilometres southeast of Edmonton.
The Canadian Armed Forces stated that a fire was reported on the range at approximately 1600 hours. Federal, provincial, and local authorities are coordinating. The municipal district asked the public to avoid the area and keep roads clear for emergency vehicles. Updates on the exact cause and the final casualty count are expected once the fire is contained and the scene is secured.
The base supports combat training for Canadian and allied forces. Range areas contain ammunition storage and live-fire facilities. Whether the initial event involved an explosion of munitions or another source has not been confirmed publicly. The combination of the incident and the wind-driven fire has drawn resources from across the region. Further details will depend on the ongoing investigation and medical reports from the hospitals receiving patients.
