Trump asks if the Strait of Hormuz should be renamed as Brent moves above $96
A 2 September Truth Social post proposed the label Trump Strait and claimed U.S. control of the waterway. In the Oval Office he said the idea had been just thrown out there. Iran says it is still laying mines. CENTCOM reported strikes on mine-laying kit.

Donald Trump asked on 2 September whether the Strait of Hormuz should be called the Trump Strait. The Truth Social post said the waterway was under U.S. control and that the new name would make it hotter than ever. A White House account recirculated a relabelled map. Asked later in the Oval Office how serious he was, Trump said the idea had been just thrown out there.
In a phone interview the same day he said U.S. forces now control the strait and that the previous night they had taken out 28 boats. He also said earlier B-2 raids had stopped an Iranian nuclear weapon two weeks from completion, a timeline other governments have not adopted. Brent crude moved above $96 a barrel as the remarks spread.
Mines, boats and insurance
Iran said it had laid more naval mines in the strait and laughed at the ownership claim. Iranian border guards announced the seizure of a vessel with 382,000 litres of smuggled fuel and an 11-member foreign crew. CENTCOM said recent American raids hit air-defence systems, radar and mine-laying equipment after attacks on commercial shipping. Iran fired missiles and drones at U.S. sites in Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan. Kuwaiti air defences engaged the incoming fire.
The strait is 34 kilometres across at its narrowest and about 155 kilometres long. The shipping lanes are two miles wide. A large share of seaborne oil and liquefied natural gas still has to pass. Tanker owners now price mines and American interdiction on the same voyage. That is the market content of $96 Brent. It is also why a joke name on a map is not only a joke.
No gazetteer has moved. Oman, Iran and the United Arab Emirates remain the coastal states under the law of the sea. The International Hydrographic Organization has not been asked, in public, to reprint a chart.
Talks off the table, for now
Trump used the same day to reject an ABC News report that his staff wanted Iran back at a negotiating table. He said he could not care less whether Tehran signed what he called a worthless agreement, and that he preferred the present mix of control over the strait and an Iranian economy under strain.
The civilian file from the same 48 hours sits next to that sentence. Iranian officials say a U.S. munition hit a wedding house in Kuhestak, Sirik County, killing five people. The Red Crescent has written to the International Criminal Court. CENTCOM says it does not target civilians. Control of a waterway and the wreckage of a house a few kilometres inland are now both on the public record. Only one of them can be renamed by a social-media post.
