Lalremsiami's tenth-minute shot gives India hockey gold and an LA 2028 place
India beat China 1-0 in the Asian Games women's final in Nagoya on Friday. Lalremsiami scored in the 10th minute from Sakshi's pass. Savita held the last minutes after China pulled Liu Ping. It is India's first women's Asian Games title since 1982, and it books Los Angeles.

India's women's hockey team beat China 1-0 in the Asian Games final in Nagoya on Friday, 2 October, and took a direct place at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. The only goal came in the 10th minute. Sakshi played the pass. Lalremsiami turned away from her marker and hit a reverse strike into the top of the net. Liu Ping, the Chinese goalkeeper, did not get a hand to it.
That was the match. China, the defending champions and the Olympic silver medallists, had the rest of the hour to level it and did not. In the closing minutes China took Liu Ping off for an extra outfield player. Savita, in the Indian goal, was not beaten. The hooter went with the score still 1-0. India are Asian Games champions for the first time since 1982.
The 44-year gap, and a 4-0 memory
The last women's title was 1982. The team that won in Nagoya had a more recent scar. China beat India 4-0 in the semi-final at the Hangzhou Asian Games. Earlier this year, in the Netherlands, India held China to a 2-2 draw in the opening match of the FIH Women's World Cup. Friday's final sat between those two results: not the collapse of Hangzhou, and not a share of the points. One shot, and a goalkeeper who did not concede after it.
Salima Tete was part of the move that produced the goal, before Sakshi's final pass. The reports do not list a second Indian shot of the same quality. A second goal would have changed the last ten minutes. India did not get one, and did not need one. China's decision to pull the goalkeeper at the end is the admission that a single goal was going to be enough if Savita stayed upright. She did. An empty net and an extra attacker is the highest-variance choice a defending champion can make. It failed.
What the gold buys
Asian Games gold in women's hockey is also a qualification rule. The winner goes to the Olympics without a further tournament. Los Angeles 2028 is now on India's card by that route. China, as runners-up, do not get the same automatic berth from this match. They will have other paths, including world ranking and later continental play. India do not have to take them. That changes the calendar for Hockey India. A qualifying tournament eats a season of friendlies and risks an injury to the one goalkeeper who has just held a final. Skipping it does not make the Olympic group easier. It removes one way of missing the Games entirely.
The scoreline will travel better than the possession figures, which the first reports did not publish. A 1-0 built in the 10th minute and held for 50 more is a different game from a 1-0 scrambled in the 58th. Lalremsiami's reverse hit is the piece of play that will be clipped. The structural fact is older. A programme that last stood on this podium in 1982, that lost a semi-final 4-0 to the same opponent at the previous Games, has the title and the Olympic place on the same evening.
Who has to be on the pitch in 2028
Savita is the name the last minutes turned on. Liu Ping is the name China were willing to do without. Lalremsiami is the name on the scoresheet. Sakshi and Salima Tete are the names in the move. A final won 1-0 does not tell a selector who tired, who gave the ball away, or who China targeted on restarts. It does tell them that this XI, on this day, survived an empty-net finish against the team that had put four past them in a semi-final not long ago.
The next test is not another Asian final. It is whether the same core, with Savita still the last line, can live with an Olympic draw in 2028. That draw does not exist yet. The berth does. Between now and Los Angeles the side will play World Cup cycles and tours that no longer carry a qualification gun. Friday's 1-0 is the reason those matches are preparation rather than a ticket.
