The rupee jumps 47 paise to 94.26, a two-month high against the dollar
The move followed a large mobilisation of foreign-currency funds that traders say gave the Reserve Bank more room to defend the unit. Nifty climbed back through 24,000 in the same session as banks led the tape.

The Indian rupee rose 47 paise on Thursday to 94.26 against the US dollar, the strongest print in two months, after closing Wednesday at 94.97. Dealers described a burst of dollar selling once it became clear that a recent mobilisation of foreign-currency funds had exceeded what the market had built into the price.
The same session put the Nifty back above 24,000. By late morning the index was quoted near 24,010, up about 0.4 percent from Wednesday’s close of 23,914.45. The Sensex added more than 260 points to trade near 76,832 after finishing Wednesday at 76,570.35. Private banks, PSU banks and realty led. Nifty IT was the main drag, down about 1 percent.
Those two facts belong together. A firmer rupee lowers the imported cost of crude at the margin and eases the imported inflation that has sat over the bond market since the latest round of strikes around the Strait of Hormuz. Brent has been quoted in the mid-90s for days. A 47-paise jump does not cancel that bill. It does change the overnight funding maths for importers who must buy dollars every morning.
Foreign institutional investors had already turned buyers. They purchased Indian equities worth Rs 6,688.37 crore on 1 September, according to exchange data cited in Thursday morning notes. Gift Nifty opened at 24,111.50, 146.5 points above the previous close, which told local desks to expect a gap up before the cash market opened. Adani Ports, Power Grid, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank and State Bank of India were among the early Sensex gainers. Tech Mahindra, Sun Pharma, HCLTech and Maruti were among the early laggards.
Gold moved with the same dollar turn. In Mumbai, 10 grams of 24-carat gold was quoted at Rs 1,55,350 and 22-carat at Rs 1,42,400, according to goodreturns.in city rates compiled on Thursday. The MCX October gold contract rose about 1 percent to Rs 1,53,988 per 10 grams in morning trade. Silver September futures were up about 1 percent at Rs 2,28,550 a kilogram. Those prints will shift again if US nonfarm payrolls, due later this week, reprice the Federal Reserve path.
The two-month high is not a new all-time level. The rupee has spent much of 2026 weaker than 94 as oil stayed high and as the Hormuz war kept freight and insurance premia elevated. What changed this week is the supply of dollars the Reserve Bank can show the market, not a sudden drop in India’s oil bill. Traders said the mobilisation of foreign-currency funds was larger than expected. They did not publish the exact size. Until the RBI does, the 47-paise figure is the public measure of how much that surprise was worth in one session.
Equity desks treated the currency move as permission to buy banks. Nifty Private Bank was up about 1.17 percent and Nifty PSU Bank about 1.15 percent in the morning. That is a domestic-rate trade as much as a currency trade. If the rupee holds, imported inflation prints ease, and the case for holding bank shares through the next policy meeting looks cleaner than it did on Wednesday, when the Sensex fell 374 points.
None of this settles the oil problem. India’s Russian crude intake already dropped 26 percent from July’s record, according to Kpler figures published this week, and Russia’s share of the Indian barrel fell from 55.9 percent to 45 percent. A stronger rupee helps pay for whatever barrel replaces that volume. It does not create the barrel.
The test for Friday and next week is whether 94.26 was a one-day squeeze or a new range. Payrolls data in the United States will move Treasury yields. Yields moved a little lower overnight and helped Asian stocks. If they reverse, the rupee will give back part of Thursday’s gain and the Nifty will have to hold 24,000 without the currency tailwind. For now the tape has a number. The rupee is 94.26. That is 47 paise better than Wednesday, and the best it has been in two months.
