The Atlantic reaches peak season with no hurricane, first time since 1941

The National Hurricane Center said the Atlantic basin passed 11 September without producing a hurricane, the latest such date in the satellite era that began in 1966. The previous marks were Hurricane Gustav on 11 September 2002 and Hurricane Humberto on 11 September 2013. Go back before routine satellites and the last comparable blank stretch ended on 21 September 1941. By 12 September 2026 the season was 103 days old and still had no hurricane.
Five systems reached tropical-storm strength and received names: Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal, Dolly and Edouard. None found the combination of warm, deep water, moist air and light wind shear needed to reach 74 miles per hour. Edouard came closest, approaching hurricane strength before it moved inland near the Texas-Louisiana line. A typical season by 10 September, the climatological peak, has already produced several hurricanes. This year the National Hurricane Center map has been empty of developing cyclones for days at a time.
Phil Klotzbach of Colorado State University called the basin the most dormant since 1950. Accumulated cyclone energy, which multiplies storm strength by how long a system lasts, stood near 4.4 units around this date against a long-term average near 60.5. Lindsey Long, a meteorologist with the NOAA office that issues seasonal outlooks, said the quiet still surprised her team even after a spring forecast that had already called for a below-normal year of three to six hurricanes.
The main brake is El Niño. The 2026 event is on track to rank among the stronger episodes since 1950. El Niño raises wind shear across the tropical Atlantic and tends to dry the middle atmosphere. Those two changes shred the cores of young storms before they can organise. The same pattern can leave the eastern Pacific more active. The Atlantic pays the price.
Forecasters are careful not to cash the season early. The official window runs to 30 November. In 1905 the first hurricane formed on 8 October. In 1941 it arrived on 21 September. Late-season storms that form in the western Caribbean or the Gulf can still hit land with little warning, and El Niño's shear is weaker close to the U.S. coastline than it is in the deep tropics. The National Hurricane Center said it saw no hurricane formation in the coming week. It did not say none would form in October.
Coastal emergency offices now sit in an awkward spot. A record quiet season lowers public attention. It does not lower the cost of a single late major hurricane. Last year the United States avoided a hurricane landfall. A second quiet landfall year would be unusual. It would not be a forecast.
The useful number for readers is not zero. It is 4.4 against 60.5. That gap is the measure of how little spinning heat the Atlantic has released so far. El Niño explains most of the gap. The remaining weeks will show whether the pattern holds or whether a late storm finds the one corridor the shear left open.
