Tamil Nadu Scraps Parandur Airport Project, Seeks Alternative Site

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced on Monday that the government is dropping the proposed greenfield airport at Parandur and will identify an alternative site that minimises impact on agricultural land and residential areas.

The decision followed public opposition and a review meeting at the Secretariat. Vijay also unveiled a welfare package that includes free travel for women on deluxe and express buses and three free LPG cylinders.

The Parandur project had been under consideration for years as a second airport for the Chennai region. Officials will now examine other locations, including possible expansion options linked to the Hosur area.

The welfare measures form part of a broader set of announcements valued in the thousands of crores. Implementation timelines for the free cylinder scheme and expanded bus access were not immediately detailed.
